If you've never seen a Curly Wurly before (as if!) now you know exactly what it's like. It's been around since 1970, and was voted most popular chocolate bar still in production in a 2004 online poll. Curly Wurly, the iconic bar of chocolate-coated soft caramel, was launched in the Tyne Tees area of the UK in late 1970 and then across other TV regions until it went national in September 1972. It was relaunched towards the end of 1974 with an improved recipe, making the caramel softer to chew. But how was this bizarre bar conceived? Early development documents show that the product was developed during group discussions with children, which explains the bar’s rather fun character. Although the recipe is simple – just chocolate and good quality caramel – forming the shape on a mass scale required considerable technical expertise. Immediately after the launch, sales took off at a much higher level than anticipated. Within two or three weeks, opening stocks were exhausted and the product had to be temporarily withdrawn from the market.
